What is Crystalline Waterproofing?
Crystalline waterproofing is a method that uses special chemicals to create a network of microscopic crystals inside concrete. These crystals block water from penetrating the concrete, effectively making it watertight while still allowing vapour to pass through.
Why Do Dlients Prefer Crystalline Waterproofing?
Clients choose crystalline waterproofing because it not only stops water from entering but also has a unique self-healing ability. When water comes into contact with the concrete, the active chemicals react with moisture and free lime to form new crystals, sealing any micro cracks that may develop over time. This ongoing reaction helps protect the structure from future water damage, extending its lifespan.
How Does Crystalline Waterproofing Work?

1. Concrete is naturally porous and contains millions of tiny hairline cracks, also known as voids and capillary pores.
2. Once the crystalline waterproofing compound is applied or added to the concrete mix, the active ingredients begin to penetrate the concrete's capillary pores, carried in by water.
3. These active ingredients chemically react with calcium hydroxide (free lime that is present in concrete). In the presence of water, they form insoluble crystals that fill and block the capillaries. These crystals remain dormant when dry but will activate and reactivate whenever moisture is present, even years later.
4. You will get concrete that is watertight but still allows vapour to pass through, preventing moisture buildup inside the structure.
Vandex: A Leader in Crystalline Waterproofing
Vandex is a leading brand specialising in crystalline waterproofing products for concrete structures. There are two main types:
Vandex AM 10: An integral crystalline waterproofing admixture added directly to the concrete mix during batching (1–2% of cement weight). It becomes part of the concrete matrix, providing internal waterproofing without the need for surface membranes or coatings.
Vandex Super: A ready-mixed cementitious slurry applied to hardened concrete by brush, spray or dry sprinkle methods. The product is applied after the concrete has cured. It is applied to the surface at the construction site to make the concrete more waterproof.
Self-Healing and Reactivation
Vandex AM 10 offers self-healing properties that reactivate when exposed to moisture, sealing new cracks up to 0.5 mm wide. In contrast, Vandex Super forms a permanent crystalline seal on the surface. While it can also reactivate in the presence of moisture, its effect is limited to the depth it penetrates and does not extend deeply into the concrete.
Where It Is Applied
Vandex AM 10 is ideal for new concrete work, making it a popular choice for structures such as basements, tunnels, swimming pools, marine structures, parking areas or data centres. In contrast, Vandex Super is suitable for existing concrete structures such as foundations, concrete slabs, wall joints, retaining walls, water tanks, swimming pools and even clean water storage areas.
